Pay a toll to unlock your phone.

Choose the apps that eat your day. Opening one costs push-ups or jumping jacks, counted by your camera — entirely on your device. Nothing recorded. Nothing uploaded.

The problem

A blocker you can turn off isn't a blocker.

Willpower is a resource. You spend it all day — on your inbox, your commute, the last conversation that went sideways — and by the time you reach for the app you told yourself you'd quit, there isn't much left. A toggle you control when you're at your weakest isn't friction. It's a suggestion you can decline.

Willpower
Runs out

Highest in the morning. Spent down by every decision you make all day. Gone by the time it matters most — late at night, mid-scroll, half asleep.

Physical friction
Doesn't run out

Twenty push-ups cost the same effort at 7am and at midnight. It doesn't have a bad day. It doesn't negotiate.

One of those actually works.

How it works

Three steps. Every time.

No settings to dig through, no "remind me tomorrow." Every gated app runs the same sequence.

Pick your apps

Choose which apps get gated — the ones that actually eat your afternoon. Everything else on your phone stays exactly as it is.

Open one

Tap a gated app like you always do. TollGate steps in before it opens — there's no swiping past it.

Pay the toll

Do the reps. Your camera counts them and checks your form. Finish the set, and the app unlocks for a timed window.

Timed window

A paid toll unlocks the app for 15 minutes by default. When the window closes, the gate comes back.

Costs more each time

Turn on escalation and your fifth visit to a gated app in a day costs more reps than your first.

Built to resist cheating

Elbow angle and arm elevation are checked, half-reps are flagged, fast reps are rejected, and the counter stops if you leave the frame.

The alarm gate

An alarm you can't sleep through.

Every phone alarm has the same weakness: the off switch is right there, half-asleep, one swipe away. TollGate alarms don't have one.

  • Prop your phone up before bed. When the alarm fires, it keeps ringing until the reps are done — not tapped, not swiped, done.
  • The same camera check as every toll. Push-ups or jumping jacks, form verified on-device, exactly like a daytime gate.
  • No free snooze. There's no button that makes the noise stop for nothing. Moving is the only way out.
On-device, always

Your camera never leaves your phone.

Every rep is counted by pose detection running locally, in real time, using Google's ML Kit. There's no server in the loop — nothing to see, even if something wanted to.

  • Nothing recorded. Frames exist for as long as it takes to count a rep. Then they're gone.
  • Nothing saved. No video, no photos, no biometric profile is ever written to storage.
  • Nothing uploaded. Camera data never touches the network — not to TollGate, not to anyone.

The game layer

Progress you can see.

Every toll paid earns XP. XP builds levels. Consistency builds streaks. Streaks unlock achievements. There's a leaderboard if you want to compare reps with anyone else using TollGate.

XP

Every toll paid earns experience, scaled to reps and difficulty.

Levels

XP adds up into levels — a running record of how consistent you've been.

Streaks

Show up daily and the streak climbs. Miss a day and it resets.

Leaderboard

Questions

Before you ask.

What if I'm injured, or just can't do the reps?

Use the escape hatch. It's built into every gate — it costs XP and breaks your streak, but it always lets you through. Injuries happen and some days your body isn't up for it. TollGate is designed to slow you down, not trap you. If something hurts, stop and check with a doctor before you push through it.

Does it record me?

No. Pose detection runs entirely on your device. Frames are processed in real time to count reps and check form, and then they're gone — nothing is saved, nothing is uploaded, nothing leaves your phone.

Can I cheat it?

Not from the couch. TollGate checks your form — elbow angle on push-ups, arm elevation on jumping jacks — flags half-reps, rejects reps thrown implausibly fast, and stops counting the moment you leave the frame.

What if I need my phone in an emergency?

TollGate only gates the specific apps you choose to lock — your phone app, messages, maps and everything else you didn't gate stay open. And if you genuinely need into a gated app right now, the escape hatch gets you there. It costs XP and breaks your streak; that's the tradeoff for an immediate way out.

What happens if I don't finish the reps?

The app stays locked and an alarm gate keeps ringing. There's no partial credit — stop the exercise and you're back where you started, still gated.

How long does an unlock last?

Fifteen minutes by default. After that, the gate closes and your next visit costs another toll. Turn on escalation and a fifth visit in one day costs more reps than the first — the price goes up with use, not down.

Doesn't the escape hatch make the whole thing pointless?

No — it makes it honest. A blocker with no way out gets uninstalled the first time you're in real trouble. The escape hatch costs XP and breaks your streak on purpose, so it's there for emergencies and injuries, not for a Tuesday afternoon.

Which platforms is it on?

iOS and Android.

A blocker you can turn off isn't a blocker.

Willpower runs out. Twenty push-ups don't. iOS and Android — $59.99/year or $14.99/month, with a 3-day trial on the annual plan.
